The History of Maverick HOG Chapter

by Chuck Mabrey, Chapter Historian
and Jack Graham, former Chapter Historian

In the 1970's a national riding club called the Harley-Davidson Owners Association (HDOA) sprang up in California. One of the local chapters in Texas was chartered at what was then Eddie Conley’s Harley-Davidson on Plano Road.

In 1983 Harley-Davidson created the Harley Owners Group (HOG). For the first couple of years it was a national membership only. For this reason many people belonged to both HOG and the local HDOA at the same time. In 1984 Eddie Conley sold his dealership. In 1985 HOG started issuing local charters. Eddie’s old HDOA switched over to be a local HOG. This was the beginning of Dallas Texas HOG. In 1988 the Dallas HOG chapter moved from Plano Road to Shiloh Road in Garland.

1988
: Lee Wood’s daughter, Dee Ann, started leading Wednesday night dinner rides out of Lee Wood’s Harley-Davidson on Harry Hines. Kevin Meyers took over leading these rides when Dee Ann went back to Midwestern University.

1989: The Dallas HOG Chapter on Shiloh Road in Garland started experiencing growing pains. There were differences of opinion regarding what activities the Chapter should pursue and where the Chapter should ride. In the end, several of the Dallas HOG members approached Lee Wood to start a new North Texas HOG Chapter out of his shop on Harry Hines. Lee gave his approval and the North Dallas Texas Chapter was born receiving its Charter on February 5, 1990. Lynn Causey became the first Director by a coin toss. Some of the Charter Members were Ron Taylor, Gary Mackie, Newman Lofland, Jack Burns, Tim Connor, Bill Hoh, D.L. Wood, Dee Ann Wood and Lee Wood. Roger Wren, Regional Director, hosted the meeting for the second annual Texas State HOG Rally of which was later held in San Antonio.

1991: Lynn Causey named Newman Lofland the Chapter Director. Jack Burns was Secretary, Treasurer and Membership Chairman. Jim Henry, Newsletter Editor, mailed the first issue of the HoGazette. Dues were raised to $10 per year. Roger Wren was the volunteer Regional Director.

1992: Newman refused to name a successor, but had the chapter officers vote and they elected Ron Meligan. Ron moved to Florida in mid-year, so the chapter officers convinced Jack Burns to grudgingly take the office. Linda Peavy was the first paid Regional Director. By December we were mailing out 140 newsletters.

1993: The officers chose Dan Cofall for director. Other officers were: John Riodan-Assistant Director, Guy Empie-Assistant Director, Jim Henry-Editor, Stuart Craft-Treasurer, Jim Hughes-Secretary, Cheryl Hatcher-LOH, Keith Griffith-Safety, Jim Woods-Photography and Steve Inmon-Head Road Captain. Other Road Captains were Jerry Bragg, Jack Burns, Cliff Fair, Henry Graham, Charles Hatcher, Don Nolen and Ron Taylor. This year saw the Big Bend Run and Tom Stone’s Eureka Springs run. 46 motorcycles spent the night on the Jefferson, TX run. The State Rally was held in Amarillo. We had 431 members by December.

1994: John Riordan was elected Director. Guy Empie was Asst. Director. Jim Henry was the Newsletter Editor. Back then we would meet at Jim’s house to collate, fold, staple and label the newsletters. Jim had a copier in his dining room that he used to run off the copies. The pay was in pizzas. One of the guests of honor was Jim's Cocker Spaniel. Newman Lofland was the Activities Officer. Membership Officer was Paul Metzger. Charles Hatcher was the Secretary and his wife, Cheryl, was the LOH Officer. Back then we also had an Assistant LOH Officer who was Lewelen Empie, Guy Empie’s wife. Treasurer was Stuart Craft. Jerry Bragg was the Safety Officer. The emphasis was on safety with enough of the members taking the safety courses that Milwaukee sent a plaque of recognition that was hung on the wall of Lee Wood’s dealership. Road Captains were Jack Burns, Jim Hughes, Don Nolen, Don Fleischman, Ronnie Duke, Jud Walker, Dennis Murawski and Chuck Hasley. Chuck used to play keyboards for the Maylee Thomas band and was a salesman at Lee Wood’s for a while. Our Chapter meetings were held in Lee Wood’s parking lot standing up. If it was too hot we moved west of the building to be in the shade. After a short meeting, we would go for a lunch ride. Wednesday night dinner rides were still the tradition back then. We repeated our highly successful 1993 trip to Jefferson, TX. We were a little more daring back then and scheduled rides to Jim’s down in Axtell and attended the Harley Hill Halloween Hoot. We also had a Hill Country run back then. Jack Cobb was the regional director as of Nov 1994. Jack was a real fan of Hooter's restaurant. He even had Hooter's tattoos on his arms. The Texas State HOG Rally was in South Padre. Harley-Davidson had an annual Miss Harley-Davidson, Gina Galligan, a tradition Harley has since abandoned. The chapter saw the largest growth in one year finishing at 658.

1995: Guy Empie was elected Director. Jerry Bragg was chosen as Asst. Director. Jim Henry continued as Newsletter Editor. His newsletter folding parties at his house are legendary. Other Officers were Charles Hatcher-Secretary, Cheryl Hatcher-Membership and LOH, Jud Walker-Safety, and Larry Hollingsworth-Activities Director. Road Captains were Don Fleischman, Stuart Craft, Dennis Murawski and Dave Anderson. North Texas HOG hosted the State Rally. Jim Henry, Jerry Bragg and Jud Walker were busy with the Republic of Texas State HOG Rally with Maylee Thomas and "Asleep at the Wheel". It was the biggest yet with 5,039 attending. "Empieville" was a favorite destination for a few. "Chief" was a road captain. This was the year of the infamous blacked-out newsletter. Jim believed in calling things as he saw them. Milwaukee and the dealership often disagreed with some of the phrases. All newsletters have to be read and approved by the dealership and they would black out the offending phrases with a black magic marker. Jim's last newsletter was half blacked out. We had close to 500 members that year. Dues were $12.

1996: Dave "Chief" Anderson was elected director. Larry Hollingsworth was appointed Asst. Director. Other Officers were Bill Laney-Treasurer, Chuck Mabrey-Editor and Historian, Judy Mabrey-Membership and Secretary, Jay Laney-LOH, Dennis Murawski-Safety, Don Fleischman-Activities, Kendall Hutton-Photographer and Karen Dyslin-Merchandise Coordinator. Road Captains were Jud Walker, Ron Taylor, Cabot Frenette, Paul Prizzi, Joyce Martinez and Buddy Jenkins. Dues were raised to $15. The HoGazette was handed over to Chuck Mabrey. On February 10 Chief attempted to "jump" Lake Texoma with Sandy Bowers on the back of the bike. Chuck broke his leg on the ride to the Oasis at Joe Pool Lake April 20 and was off the bike for 3 months. We continued the tradition of the Big Bend ride in May, the last with the Odessa Chapter. This was also the year of the "Sleazy Bar Ride." Jim Henry, Jerry Bragg, Jud Walker and Dennis Murawski had their hands full with the Republic of Texas HOG Rally with Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings in June. This one was hosted by Texas H-D, the shop in Bedford, TX. Valerie McDaniel was the Chapter Director in Bedford. This one topped the 1995 attendance with 7,156. Some say this was more than attended the National HOG Rally in Memphis that year. The Wednesday night dinner ride tradition continued with over 100 bikes showing up at many of the rides. Valerie McDaniel married and became a Ledterman after being proposed to on the stage in front of all the rally-goers in the June 96 Rally. Jud Walker lead our October "Hill Country Run." December saw over 730 members on our rolls.

1997: the officers re-elected Dave "Chief" Anderson as Director. He was the first Director to serve two consecutive terms. Don Fleischman was appointed Asst. Director. Other Officers were Bill Laney-Treasurer, Judy Mabrey-Secretary, Chuck Mabrey-Editor and Historian, Paul Prizzi-Activities, Jay Laney-Safety, Joyce Martinez-LOH, Robin Prizzi-Photographer, Julia Thornburg-Merchandise Coordinator and Bud Colby-Head Road Captain. Road Captains were Bob Griffice, Ben Wade, Don Hunt, Bruce Jarrett, Ed Edwards, Randy Schmit, Chris Toop, Richard Milano, Ron Bauman, Bob Dane and Jack Graham. Dues stayed at $15 even though Milwaukee said we could raise them. Enough members took safety courses that Milwaukee again sent a plaque of recognition to the Chapter. Valerie McDaniel-Ledterman became our new Regional Director. Jack Cobb went to another region in the east. The State HOG Rally was in Corpus and the R.O.T. Rally went public and stayed in Austin. We went on our first Gulfport Blowout run to Mississippi. We rode in the rain to Wimberley and Jasper. Several of our LOH ladies formed the Motorcycling Grannies and toured the country as guests of the Nostalgia TV network. We had several dinner rides with over 100 motorcycles. Sherry Sandoval won a brand new Road Glide in a Harley giveaway. Favorite after hours places were the Hole in the Wall and Cafe 121. The Texas helmet law was amended so no helmets are required if you are over 21. Chief got approval from Milwaukee for an official name change for the Chapter from North Dallas Texas Chapter to the North Texas Chapter. We closed out the year with over 850 members on our rolls. This was also the first year that Harley started keeping track of local Chapter memberships. They had us at 1,011. Milwaukee doesn’t take you off the local chapter rolls automatically at the first of the year like we do.

1998: Paul Prizzi was elected Chapter Director. Jay Laney was chosen as Assistant Director and Randy Schmit was Activities Officer. Other Officers were Bill Laney-Treasurer, Judy Mabrey-Secretary, Chuck Mabrey-Editor and Historian, Julia Dane-LOH, Bob Dane-Safety and Head Road Captain, Terri Watt-Photographer and Anne Hinman-Merchandise Coordinator. Road Captains were Richard Milano, Ben Wade, Don Hunt, Bruce Jarrett, Ed Edwards, Julia Dane, Jay Laney, Chris Toop, Robin Prizzi, Ron Bauman, Bud Colby, Jack Graham, Anne Hinman, and Tom Watt. We started the year with a ride to Luke's Out House. This was the year of the Harley-Davidson 95th Anniversary and the HOG 15th Anniversary in June. It was estimated that there were over forty bikes on the trip from Dallas to Milwaukee. The State Rally was held in Waco in May. Valerie Ledterman stayed on as Regional Director. Some of Paul's innovative rides were to see the Texas Felines, the "World Tour", and the first annual Cowboys (football) ride for kids in July. This was the year of the last Seinfeld TV show for which we had a party. The 100 bike dinner rides were becoming common place and we even had over 130 bikes a couple times. Cafe 121 was bulldozed to make room for a GTE office building. The Oasis and the Cattleman’s burned down. We closed out the year with 1,085 Chapter members.

This was the year of the introduction of the “Fat Head” Twin Cam 88 cubic inch engine. Dues were raised to $20 per year. We started the year with a ride to Luke's Out House. This was an eventful year for Randy. His house burned. The State HOG rally was held in Amarillo. 1999 was a year of "firsts." In May, North Texas HOG had their first Spring Fling Poker Run. In September, we attended the first Dallas Mile AMA Grand National Championship at Lone Star Park. We also had our first chapter picnic at old Ft. Dallas. In October we had out first Texas Forts tour. Valerie Ledterman was still Regional Director and visited the chapter on one occasion. Old Chicago became an evening hangout. Our favorite hangout for Officer's meeting's, Salerno's Gibb's Station in Coppell, closed. We lost Rod Lehr to a 18-wheeler on I-35 on December 7. We finished the year with 980 Chapter members.

The staff ran a successful mail campaign to those that were former members and had not re-upped. We also hosted our 2nd annual Poker Run with 118 showing up. In addition to the normal Wednesday night rides and the weekend rides, we started doing a once-a-month Monday 5-Star Dinner Ride and a once-a-month Friday Around-The-World Dinner Ride.

This was the year that North Texas HOG became the Maverick HOG Chapter.
We have a new certificate stating Maverick Chapter, Dallas, Texas was formed February 5, 1990.  This was a change in name only. Effective February 19, 2014, the Chapter name and number are changed. The Chapter is now known as "Maverick HOG Chapter, Dallas, Texas", Maverick Chapter #3496.   Alfred and Maritia, and their daughter Caroline Keeling-Calhoon and husband Chris Calhoon bought Lee Wood's Harley-Davidson and Harley-Davidson of North Texas. Maverick Harley-Davidson was purchased February 19th, 2014.  Alfred and Maritia also own Longhorn Harley-Davidson in Grand Prairie, TX.

Mary Harris was diagnosed with cancer. Wayne Short had a knee replacement operation that got infected and had to be redone and in August was diagnosed with lung cancer.  There was a lot of demand for the new Maverick HOG rockers and patches.  It took several months for this demand to be fulfilled. SOB used to lead the HUB rides, but hasn't been able to for 2013 and 2014. Chris Blackard took over. Roger Goolsby had surgery 10-15-14 to remove a tumor in his leg. Mary, Wayne, and Roger were in our thoughts and prayers. The untimely death of Christopher Andris took another one of our members away in December.
